  • 2021 01 01: The Kurdistan Region currently hosts 956,579 Internally Displaced People (IDPs) and refugees, numbering 698,902 IDPs and 257,857 refugees, the majority of which are Syrian refugees.

  • 2020 09 30: The United Nations Refugee Agency has published the updated numbers of IDPs and Refugees in Iraq. The report also contains the funding situation and shows how UNHCR manages camps and the displacement crisis with local partners. The report also includes a section on COVID-19 and its impact on the displaced population.

  • 2020 09 29: The Joint Crisis Coordination Centre has assessed the needs of refugees and IDPs in light of the incoming winter season. Families and camps have to be prepared to reduce the effects and mitigate the risks resulting from flash flooding, heavy snow falls and freezing cold.

  • 2020 01 31: The United Nations Refugee Agency has published the updated numbers of IDPs and Refugees in Iraq. The report also contains the funding situation and reports on how UNHCR manages camps and the displacement crisis with local partners.

  • 2020 01 27: Since the start of military action in North East Syria 19,861 individuals have crossed into the KRI seeking refuge. 8,519 Syrian refugees have obtained clearance to reunite with family members in the Kurdistan Region, or to otherwise reside outside of camps. A total of 809 new arrivals have voluntarily returned to Syria in recent weeks.

  • 2019 11 25: Since the start of military action in North East Syria 16,829 individuals have crossed into the KRI seeking refuge. 5,037 Syrian refugees have obtained clearance to reunite with family members in the Kurdistan Region, or to otherwise reside outside of camps. A total of 334 new arrivals have voluntarily returned to Syria in recent weeks.

  • 2019 11 12: The Kurdistan Region currently hosts more than 1 million of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) and refugees, numbering (790,076 IDPs) and the majority of Syrian refugees in Iraq, numbering (252,386 persons).

  • 2019 11 7: The Joint Crisis Coordination Centre has assessed the needs of refugees and IDPs in light of the incoming winter season. Half of the displaced population is composed of women, children and elders, who are in need of even more special attention.

  • 2019 11 3: Following recent military operations in North East Syria, thousands of families have escaped their villages to seek safety in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. As of 3 November, an estimated 13,634 Syrian refugees have crossed into Iraq. Most new arrivals are originally from Qamishli and Ras al Ain, followed by al-Malika, al-Hasakeh, and Afrin.

  • 2019 10 29: More than 12,000 Syrian refugees have sought shelter in Iraq since the latest influx began a fortnight ago. The refugee population at recently opened Bardarash camp has exceeded 11,000 people and more than 800 are now sheltered at Gawilan transit site. UNHCR is supporting the response led by the KRI authorities and it is working with them to ready other locations, in the event that both sites reach their capacity.

  • 2019 10 26: The number of refugees crossed into Iraq since the beginning of the hostilities has reached 11,292. On average, over 1,200 new arrivals into the Kurdistan Region were recorded daily during the past week. Bardarash Camp has reached its capacity, new arrivals will now be hosted in Gawilan camp.

  • 2019 10 22: A week after the first refugees crossed from northeast Syria into Iraq, the arrivals to the Kurdistan Region have surpassed the 7000 mark. Three out of four are women and children, with a presence of unaccompanied children too. The refugees are being welcome to the UNHCR Bardarash camp.

  • 2019 09 26: The JCC had its first meeting with the 9th KRG Cabinet. H.E. Reber Ahmed, KRG Minister of Interior chaired the meeting. The meeting resulted in several decisions and recommendations to resolve the issues facing the displaced people, meet their needs and provide them with better services in cooperation and collaboration with the Iraqi and international partners.

  • 2019 06 30: The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) published the June 2019 Bulletin for Iraq. The most important aspect is the evaluation of the Iraqi Humanitarian Fund and the rehabilitation of the Mosul dam.

  • 2019 05 31: The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) has published its May Humanitarian Snapshot following the crop fires affecting Iraq during May 2019 and how these have impacted the rate of returnees and the IDPs in camps.

  • 2019 05 14: The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) published the April 2019 Bulletin for Iraq. One of the highlight is the joint launching of the Humanitarian Response Plan between OCHA and the Iraqi Government. KRG Interior Minister, Karim Sinjari, was a speaker during the launching conference.

  • 2019 04 28: Currently the KRG is the host of 250,451 Syrian, 9,150 Turkish, 13,182 Iranian, and 760 Palestinian refugees. Contrary to popular perception, the majority of IDPs and refugees live with the host communities in the Region, while only 37% live in the 38 camps. 50% of the total displaced population live in Erbil, 31% in Duhok, and 19% in Slemani.

  • 2019 04 02: The United Nations Refugee Agency has published the updated numbers of IDPs and Refugees in Iraq. 99% of Syrian refugees in Iraq live in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq: 37% reside in 9 camps, while the remainder live in urban and peri-urban areas.

  • 2019 02 26: Since its launch in December 2016 by the KRG’s Council of Ministers, the One Stop Shop (OSS) in Joint Crisis Coordination Center (JCC) has provided a free-of-charge services including facilitation and FastTrack the custom clearance and coordination with all relevant authorities for the smooth movement for incoming numerous humanitarian cargo brought into KRI and other areas in Iraq by the international community.

  • 2018 07 04: JCC hosts regular Humanitarian Coordination Forum to discuss the humanitarian situation in the Kurdistan Region. The meeting focused on the current capacity and preparedness on all sectors and the coordination challenges.

  • 2018 05 23: Flood in the Sinjar Region leaves hundred of families strained. The humanitarian situation in Iraq is becoming a protracted displacement scenario that could remain unresolved for years. But it comes at a time when urgently needed humanitarian assistance in the country is threatened by a severe lack of funding.

  • 2018 04 19: Minister Falah Mustafa Bakir, the Head of the Department of Foreign Relations, met with Head of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Iraq, Mr. Bruno Guido in Erbil. Both sides discussed the current situation of refugees, the support of the United Nations and the upcoming Iraqi parliamentary elections.
